PM calls for 'realistic roadmap' to tackle global challenges

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the United Nations to create a 'credible and realistic' roadmap for all to implement its commitments and address global challenges. He said that in order to move the United Nations towards the right goal in a century or more, UNGA-65 should implement a commitment and create an acceptable and realistic roadmap for all to meet the global challenges.

He made the remarks in a virtual speech at a special session of the UN General Assembly that began at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday (Tuesday morning, Bangladesh time) on the occasion of the 75th founding anniversary of the UN. He also called on the United Nations not to allow geopolitical rivalries that weaken it.

"We must not allow any geopolitical rivalry that weakens the United Nations," he said. We got it from the previous ones. That is why we are indebted to them and for future generations, we also need to make the United Nations a truly comprehensive international functioning body.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh said, "I would like to say that we have witnessed many moments that have shaped the new history of our human civilization." UNGA 75 brings us another such moment.

"This epidemic has made it even harder for us to achieve our 2030 Agenda," he said. The current challenges, including the ongoing epidemic, have spread worldwide and the inability to address such crises in the international arena has been revealed. The epidemic has shown that both developed and developing countries need the United Nations more than ever before.

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh has benefited a lot from various development activities led by the United Nations. So Bangladesh is indebted to the United Nations.

On peacekeepers, the Prime Minister said Bangladesh is committed to helping maintain world peace. The United Nations peacekeeping force now has the largest number of troops and police in our country. He mentioned that 150 peacekeepers of Bangladesh have sacrificed their lives to ensure peace in the conflict-prone countries of the world.

On the occasion of the 75th founding anniversary of the United Nations, Sheikh Hasina said the organization of the founding anniversary of Bangladesh is of special importance as the birth of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman coincided with the centenary.

He further said that Bangabandhu had said in the UN session in 1974 that the UN would reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people in the future. It is a testament to Bangladesh's confidence and trust in the United Nations and multilateralism. I pay tribute to all the officials and agencies of the United Nations for their tireless efforts and dedication.

Foreign Minister. AK Abdul Momen told a virtual press briefing on Monday that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, like other world leaders, would address the UN General Assembly on September 28. Like every year, he will give a lecture in Bengali.

This is the first time in the 65-year history of the United Nations that world leaders are virtually attending the General Assembly session due to the Kovid-19 epidemic.
