Afal disaster in Khaliajuri is breaking 60 Village

At least 60 villages in Netrokona's Haor Island Khaliajuri Upazila have been devastated by the 'Afal' disaster this monsoon. In the local language, Afal is the name given to the tidal wave caused by the open air in the rainy season.

According to the locals, every year from Ashar to Kartik, Afal disaster often occurs in this upazila on the banks of Haor. In the last few decades, 20 villages of Khaliajuri have been completely destroyed by the Afal disaster.

The villages that have disappeared are: Jagadishpur, Maganpur, Bikrampur, Kanainagar, Sultanpur, Aminpur, Khurshiganj, Kalipur, Hemnagar, Asanpur, Nurpur, Kacharibari, Habibpur, Durgabari, Nagar, Shibpur, Kamarbari, Narsinghpur, Nayanagar. Although the names of these villages are mentioned in ancient maps and land records, in reality it is no more.

Swagat Sarkar Shubh, president of Khaliajuri Haor Development Council, said that the riots were not as fast as they used to be at the time of the disappearance of those villages, but at least 60 villages in Khaliajuri are still witnessing the riots. The victims of this month are Krishnapur, Nazirpur, Muradpur, Shampur, Kutubpur, Kalyanpur, Beridaulatpur, Berimuslimpur, Jaherpur, Laxmipur, Gachikhai, Chanpur, Yogimara of Khaliajuri Sadar Union. Chakua, Balli, Patra, Mukimpur, Mendipur Union, Jagannathapur, Nuralipur, Bilbillah, Nagar Union, Adampur, Nayagaon, Ballabhpur, Baghatia, Hayatpur, Khoshalpur, Gazipur, Mewat. Afal's victims are spending their days in these villages in the midst of panic and anxiety.

Krishnapur UP Chairman Shamim Mia said that apart from village demolition in Afal Tandbe Union this monsoon, the road from Krishnapur Eidgaon ground to Kutubpur has been damaged to the tune of Tk 3 crore. Millions of rupees have been lost here as the defense walls of some educational institutions have collapsed.

Like this union, Afal disaster has affected many other public-private and private establishments of 5 other unions of Khaliajuri.

Rajib Ahmed, Project Implementation Officer (PIO) of the Khaliajuri Relief Office for Rural Infrastructure Development, said 80 out of 65 villages in the upazila were affected by the Afal violence. Of these, 50 grams are breaking down at a faster pace.

Local LGED's upazila engineer Md. Yunus Ali said that in order to prevent the erosion, it would be appropriate to build a defense wall in these villages by sloping with blocks made of single-cement. If the wall is constructed through blocks, it can be easily moved for village expansion or any other need.

Khaliajuri Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) AHM Ariful Islam said the process of identifying the villages that were being destroyed by the Afal riots and repairing them and sending proposals for construction of village defense walls was underway.

Khaliajuri Upazila Parishad Chairman Golam Kibria Jabbar said most of the families affected by the catastrophic disaster were poor and dependent on agriculture. Every year, they spend 40 per cent of their hard-earned agricultural income on buying bamboo, mats or other materials to protect their homes from the onslaught.

Therefore, in order to alleviate their expenses and misery and for humanitarian reasons, he is requesting the concerned upper house to come forward immediately to build a village defense wall here.
